Professional info

Throughout my career I have always worked with words and have sought to inspire students through my words. I am successful author of over 200 ESL texts. My published works include ESL coursebooks, workbooks, progress tests, listening tests, reading comprehensions and plays.

I have also been a tenured university lecturer in professional communication at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and now wish to concentrate on other writing projects.

All these roles have served me well in my private life as a mother of a boy with autism. Jamie's disabilities manifested themselves in his spoken communication - his comprehension was very limited and he needed guidance in the basics of conversation. I have now worked with him for over fifteen years and have written a book about our challenges and successes - 'Talk to Me: Conversation Strategies for Parents of Children on the Autism Spectrum or with Speech and Language Impairments.' I am available to speak on this topic at various venues.

Freelance textbook writer

1986 - present

I have been working in the field of communication for over 20 years. As a textbook writer, I have four courses to my name - courses published in Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia and have acted as a consultant to the People's Education Press of China. Over many years of textbook writing, I have worked for Longman, Macmillan Far East, Star Publishing, Pan Pacific and Manhattan Press. The coursebooks I co-authored have all been scrutinised and approved by either the Ministry of Education in Singapore or the Education Bureau in Hong Kong.

Special Projects Officer

2003 - 2006

In the 00s, I worked as a Special Projects Officer at Spectronics, supervising HR, OHS, conference organisation and quality. Working in this dynamic and tightly knit company developed and consolidated my administrative and organisational skills and gave me further insights into the world of children with learning disabilities.

Lecturer, QUT

1993-1996

During this period I worked as a lecturer in the Faculty of Business, Department of Communication. I co-organised Professional Communication, led Issues in Publishing and tutored in Speech Communication and Written Communication. All subjects demanded high standards in spoken and written communication.

Education

University of New England

1981 - B.A. in English and Foreign Languages

At university I specialised in Linguistics and old languages, such as Old Norse, Old English, Middle English, Sanskrit, Latin and the Ursprache, Indo-European. I did also take German, French and an introductory course in Italian.

University of New England

1988 - Master of Letters in English (Drama)

As drama is my special interest, I enrolled in this two-year course comprising one year's coursework and one year's thesis. For my thesis, I chose the plays of Tom Stoppard, analysing them as examples of post-quantum physics reality. This 35,000-word dissertation explored his indebtedness to non-dramatic models of reality in art, maths and physics. It was awarded a High Distinction.

Australasian Training Academy

2013 - Advanced Diploma in TESOL

This diploma concentrated on Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and allows me to travel to foreign countries and work in schools there. It also gave me the theoretical grounding in teaching grammar and vocabulary to a range of ages.

Charles Sturt University

2018 - Graduate Diploma of Theology

This diploma introduced me to the church history, liturgical practice, Biblical interpretations and theological implications.
